Hello
So Ive been offered a 4.0 SOHC manufactured Sep 05 with engine code 6G 972 AA which may be manufactured for Ranger??

Can I just drop this into my 98 Explorer? Seller says theres an extra plug on it but I dont really know what it is, he says the explorer doesnt need it and it will still work...:salute:

Many thanks any advice welcome...

Just use all your accessories and it will bolt right in. You will have to remove a freeze plug for your pcv canister.

fuel system

Thanks for your reply...

I just read one post that said "The fuel system will be different. In 99 it was switched to returnless.
The fuel injectors will not fit the harness"

What do u thank of that?

Use all fuel injection components off your original 98 SOHC engine.

I used a 2004 Ranger engine in my 99. I used all the intake and fuel system from the Explorer. I did not transfer the PCV box and used the valve covers from the 04 with the breather on the drivers side for the PCV. The only problem I encountered was that the two coolant temp sensors on the 2004 are the same and I had to modify the harness to make them connect, however I must have connected the one for the instrument cluster backward because the gauge does not work. I also used the oil pan from the 99 to keep the oil sensor although in hindsight I would not have bothered with that. The newer engine won't have a balance shaft so one less timing chain to worry about failing. BTW the exhaust manifolds are different as well, I had to modify the flanges because the stud spacing is different.

Good luck

Its best to strip it down the the long block, and put it in and put all your explorer stuff on top. Some things will be the same but its easier to put it all back to stock than modify things to make it work.
