2001 Ranger Edge 3.0l.
After getting stuck the winter before last, over several months, the brakes started strange severe pulsations, ABS light came on. the engine started surging severely on acceleration and sometimes at idle. the brakes got worse, not safe to drive. Truck sits for weeks and months at a time between attempts to troubleshoot. Eventually it wouldn't start. A "no start" is easier to troubleshoot. The fuel pump had failed, open circuit. Got a cheap fuel pump off Ebay and installed it. Starts but still runs badly. Bought Scanner. Multiple codes set. Evap Purge valve ckt fault. Took a while to figure out how to check but the wire to to the purge valve was open. Tracing wire revealed an animal had been chewing on the wireing harness and several wires were cut or damaged. Fixed all the damaged wires I could see. All codes clear except Excessive EGR Flow. Cant get EGR off. No wrench big enough. Bought a big Adjustable wrench. EGR tube nut won't budge. Tried some heat. Still won't budge. Started squirting penetrating oil on it several times a day for several days. Got it loose, but Nothing apparently wrong with EVR Valve or ports. Observed 2 hoses go from side of EGR tube to a sensor. EGR flow Sensor, or whatever they call it, had corroded inside the hose connections shedding enough white gunk to clogg one of the hoses. Cleaned it. No codes and running much better but still not perfect. Started on the brakes. Couldn't get the drums off. Was trying to avoid using heat but thats what it took. There had been no previous sign that the brakes were getting worn and it wasn't driven much after these problems started. Parts fell out when the drums came off. What little friction material left was, not attached to the shoes. Self adjuster parts rusted and falling out. Installed new shoes, spring, and adjuster parts. Brakes work normal. ABS light still on. Licence expired while truck sat, but I need a emissions check before I can renew. Test center can't complete emissions test cus it hasn't been driven enough since worked on. Still not running perfect and it set a code for #3 Cylinder missfire. Resistance check of #3 plug wire ok. Replaced #3 plug wire with an old one I had. It seemed to run better. Pulled a spark plug and the gap was worn about 1/8 inch. Regapped the plugs. Running fine, No codes so far. Driving it again. Had to add a can of R134 for the AC. Scanner shows incomplete for EVAP test and ok for all others. ABS light still on. Now fuel tank will only accept fuel very slowly. Read some posts here about that. Will try for Emissions test again in a couple days.
