I went out to start my 91 Ranger yesterday and it fired right up then stalled.
Upon further attempts to start it sounded like the starter was engaging but the engine was not turning over I bench tested the starter and it is fine can anyone possibly tell me what might be the problem.
advance thanks to those that post replys..::confused:

Hmm...you are sure the starter is good? And the battery has a full and complete charge...and is a good battery? If all that checks out, grab a socket and wrench and try and turn the motor over by hand with the front crank pulley bolt...and pray it turns!

Have your local auto parts store test the starter. They do it for free. A healthy starter will literally hop around on the floor unless you put your foot on it while testing. I've had bad starters still spin when unbolted and connected to a battery, but if it doesn't try to jump around when you connect the battery, it isn't strong enough to turn that motor over.

The starter is ok and is cranking the motor however the sound is not the usual sound it makes when i try to start it.I wonder if by chance the timing belt could have slipped a cog.I re[placed the timing belt last winter when i replaced the head gasket so i know it is not worn out.anyways it is -35c outside and at that temp i aint able to work on it till it warms up so i will just research more untill then.

...What is the sound it makes??? Where is the sound coming from??? Are you getting fuel since you say it cranks and the starter is ok???
