Two weekends ago I got my first gen sport stuck in a water trap. See here->http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?t=292586I had water up to the back seat. While stuck, I revved it once to try and rock it out and then I guess the engine suffocated and died. Immediately turned the key off and didn't start it until after I was on dry ground and gave it a few minutes to drip dry.

Then the real problems started. I can't replicate them at will, they just kind of pop up. First, it seems more underpowered than it was before. I step on the gas and eventually it gets up to speed.

Second, it has been idling rough and if it sits for about 5 minutes the RPMs just drop and it sputters than dies. Can't tell you the exact RPM's because according to my gauge, I'm always going 4000 rpm. Also, when driving it will without warning sputter and then catch again.

Thirdly, and this is what worries me most. While driving, my CEL light comes on and I hear a rattle from what sounds like the drivers side part of the engine compartment. When I say rattle, I mean like some one doing a drum roll on a loose metal plate. If I back off the gas to about half, it eventually goes away. If I goose it, I get the rattle. This happens whether the engine is hot or cold. Again, it comes and goes as it pleases. Happens on straight roads and hills alike.

I pulled codes and they just keep me running around in circles. First I got the MAF sensor wasn't operating in normal ranges so I took it off and cleaned it. The air filter/box are dry as a bone and still pretty clean. Tried Dry Gas and Sea Foam in the tank. I'm a little wary about putting it in the vac lines or crank case due to the mixed results I've read. Cleaned the IAC. Now I get code 172- O2 censor not switching properly as well as 411 and 167 which both say not idling properly.

If you made it this far, thanks for sticking with me. Hopefully you guys can shed some light on this. I might try and change the O2 sensor if I get to it, otherwise it's going to the mechanic on Monday. Thanks!

I didn't read the other thread in great detail. With water that deep, I'd be worried that several connectors got wet. The O2 sensor connector would have been underwater. If there was water in the cabin, the PCM could have gotten wet (which could cause all kinds of problems). I didn't see any mention of a serious (and tedious) effort to thoroughly dry everything out. I might start with the PCM, check it for water/dampness, and maybe even open it up to give it a thorough chance to dry out.

I should have mentioned that I took the seats/carpet out and left a big fan in there to air dry it for about a week. I sponged up the excess water. The PCM was still dry, the car was listed to the left.

The rattle might be a motor mount. Pull the plugs and wires and replace. Check your oil for water. Also, check those O2 sensors.

Probably bent rod due to water ingestion. That would give you rough idle and the noise on acceleration.
