Rattle from front right wheel area - not A Pillar

I am having the same issue, but it is just a chattering noise(no squeaking or rubbing) that is getting progressively worse and seems to be from the right side when going over rough pavement/bumps...

Hi Smash2723,

I want to offer the same assistance to you that I have to other people on the forum. Send me a PM with your information (VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name); I'll get to work on your case.

So I take it my front end noise is normal then?

Got a call yesterday from the regional Ford customer representative to touch base on what's happening.

Dealer appointment is set for next week (Monday) so we will see what the new diagnosis brings.

Hi converted_21,

Have you taken your Explorer to the dealership so they can perform an inspection? They'll be your best bet to determine if the noise is normal or not. I can get your information in front of your regional customer service manager so they can assist; just send me a PM with your info (VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name) so we can get started.

Thanks for the update, R1chard! Touch base with us next week and let us know how the appointment goes.

Update:

Had my appointment yesterday and the dealer seems baffled as to what may be causing this intermittent noise. Dealer has been in contact with the Ford Engineering Hotline in order to diagnose the underlying problem.

Furthermore, the Ford regional rep contacted me today for a follow up and will do so again tomorrow.

Just really want this fixed, done, over and my car back since I'm driving a not so nice vehicle as a loaner (2008 Mazda CX7 with 68K). This car makes me cherish my 2013 Explorer more and more every time I have to use it.

Everyone (service department staff members and Ford rep) seems to be really trying to get to the bottom of this which I am very thankful for.

Hope to find out more later today from the dealer to an update of today's ventures.

Did you happen to mention what dco43054 found as being the problem with his rattle?

Indeed, I mentioned it to the tech right upfront (during the original visit and diagnosis test drive) who stated he checked it over and said it is performing according to spec.

:(

EDIT: I contacted dco43054 for the part number he replaced so I can provide specifics to the Ford tech working on my vehicle.

Update 2: The dealer is now replacing the whole strut assembly. The parts have been ordered and hopefully I will have my car back mid day tomorrow.

Richard, I'll be real interested if this fixes it. I have a '13 2wd Limited with 10k miles and have been hearing a rattling type noise much like you describe for the past few thousand miles. I need to get it to service, but would like to point them in the right direction to fix it. Have a couple of other issues to take care of as well!

Thanks for all of the updates, R1chard. Let us know how the install goes.

So it's been a 3 to 4 days post repairs and the consensus was a defective strut. The tech replaced the whole assembly and behold..... no more rattle noise.

I just came back from a 600 mile trip post repair and the car performed very well (except the occasional MFT nag here and there).

The dealer and Ford tech were quite surprised for the premature failure of the strut and can only suspect a manufacturer defect.

Hope this helps others in the same situation.
Richard

Following up on my previous post, I got my car back last Wednesday and before I could update everyone, my problem returned, worse than before. So everyone knows, they indicated on the receipt that they found the right front stabilizer link loose and ball and socket separated from the rest of the link, and the right side front struts (is there more than one?) leaking.

They replaced the right front struts and stabilizer link. Everything was good for about a day before the problem returned, and the vibration with the chatter is stronger. I'm hoping something just wasn't connected properly, but I will let everyone know what I find out. Thank you Richard for the information about the assembly, as I don't believe this was replaced, I will be sure to mention it when dropping it off.

I have a 2013 explorer limited 4wd. I ordered it and got it mid April. I had the rattle from day one. It got progressively worse every day, to the point of every little road imperfection caused the "rattle noise". They replaced the strut support as stated in the beginning of this thread. It didn't fix it. It turns out it was the strut itself. There is a defect in some of the struts they used. When they took mine out they told me that it collapsed into itself. No gas left. That, however has fixed the problem.

It is apparently a big issue. They had to have the part (strut) overnighted from the ford factory because no one had any, anywhere!! All on backorder.

This thread helped me know where to start.
Thanks!

I too have had a problem with the squeaking when over speed humps. Sounds like it is coming from the drivers side front wheel.

Got my car back today, apparently the new problem was unrelated. They said the brake pad slider came loose so the pad was rattling around in the caliper.

So, it seems that replacing the stabilizer link and strut did fix the original rattling problem.

Hope this helps others with this problem.

I am having the same problem for the third time. Rattle noise coming from the right side front. Sway bar link the last two. There has to be a reason why this part keeps breaking down. Must be something else their overlooking! Now trying to make an appointment with the dealer is a hassle.

Sounds like you're having a frustrating time with this, GeoMimi89. How many miles are on your Explorer? I'll check out some ways to help.

I have 18000 miles on my 2013 explorer. I have an appointment on November 17 with ford lincoln of queens. This is the dealer that I bought the explorer from. I just have a bad feeling they are just going to replace the part and send me on my way without trying to find out what is causing the problem. Can you help?

Sure thing, GeoMimi89. Before you head in to the dealership, send me a private message (PM) with your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and servicing dealership. I'll escalate this to your regional customer service manager (CSM). Your CSM will work with both you and your dealership to ensure this gets resolved.

2013 Noise rattle front wheel area

I am new to this forum. I currently own a 2013 Explorer XLT and have a rattle noise coming from the front wheel area of the vehicle. It only occurs on rougher paved roads not smooth paved roads. Any ideas as to what the problems could be? Has anyone dealt with this?
