I spent the morning ripping everything off the rear of my 02 sport to find that freaking rattle. I took the carpet and jack handles out and had a friend ride around in the back listening.

When he was in it the rattle when away. When he was out it was loud over very bump and pot hole. I filled every crack and panel with weather stripping. Same deal. When he is in the rear (200 lbs) no noise. Back when out.

Took out the spare. Same deal. And while under there notice this rubber bushing disintegrated

How bad will this be to fix? Body shop?

Very common with Sports and Sport Tracs that use the orange colored MCU foam mounts from the factory. Depending on undercarriage corrosion they can be somewhat labor intensive but has been done by many with basic tools mentioned in "body mount" threads. Unless replacing with stupid expensive OEM or Dorman's complete rubber mounts, outer metal shells must be reused. Search, here's two threads. GL

Check to make sure your jack hasn't loosened up. I had a rattle was was driving me crazy and it turned out the jack had come loose in its bracket/mount.

If it sounds like it's inside the rear diff, it might be the tone ring for the VSS as come loose of the ring gear (or whatever it's pressed on to). Is your speedo working?

I stripped it down: carpet out jack out, panels out, spare out. When someone is sitting over the rear body mount, no noise.

Pretty sure it's metal on metal clanking of the body.
