My brothers '91 XLT is giving off a gas smell from under the hood. You can smell it standing next to the truck and even inside while driving...I have NO idea where to start in trying to figure this out-could anyone give me any advise on things to check...I know these probs can be due to alot of factors but anything to get me started in the right direction would help.!! Thanks!!! Jordan

Are you getting any Check engine Light?

Does it mell after you start it up?

If so there is a problem with the pressurized fuel system leaking. This can be hard to find with the engine hot. Next time the engine is cold, turn the key to on (don't crank) to pressurize the system. The gas won't evaporate as fast and it will be easier to find.

If it smells when the car is cold, it is the evaporative system. There is a diagram under the hood. Check the tubing all the way back to the gas tank. Try to identify the components and check for hoses off or cracks in components. There is a charcoal canister and valve under the hood that has been lnked to this problem.

To my knowledge the light hasn't come on....

I don't have any experiance with Ford Explorers so I appreciate everyones patience here, I'll check the evap. lines/canister and see what I find...any other suggestions?? Thanks!

I don't think you'll get a light

from an evaporative system failure on a '91. Looked through the codes and could only find one in OBD-I, purge circuit failure which sounds electrical in nature. That code may or may not even exist.
