RE: ABS/Cruise Control problem. Might have a fix

I just want to say thanks to everyone, I have been following this and been putting off trying to get this part, as my abs light comes on sometimes and cruise control does not work. I checked a couple of dealerships out here, one wanted $57, and one wanted $67, I asked the second one why he was higher, he said they are all independently owned, and I said it all depends who wants to hose you more, he didn't have a comeback. Anyway I went to a scrapyard, pulled two off a wreck, guy wanted $5, turns out I pulled the wrong one, stupid I know, so I go to another scrapyard, pulled the right part this time, asked the guy what he wanted, he said just take it. Cool installed it, voila no problems. Once again thanks for all the help, I have used this forum to solve other problems and it is a great resource.

03 cruise control issues

After reading through this forum i changed the switch on the master cyclinder and the cruise works again for a bit...which it wasnt doing at all before.... it will come on and stay on for a while and then kick off when it feels like it.... ive also noticed that my brake lights stay on intermittenly as well.... i was wondering if the next step in this process is to replace the brake position switch on the pedal?? i also noticed that who ever installed the remote car starter appears to have spliced into the wire for power to the brake pedal position switch.... any one with some advice would be greatly appreciated! thank you!

What ever is causing your brake lights to stay on is likely your problem. That causes the cruise to dis-engage.

I had an Aerostar once and the cruise would not work with the headlights on. I finally figured out that the filament in one of the tail lights was broken, and when the park lights came on, it would trip the cruise off.

it could be on because the pads are getting low and the fluid in the resevoir isn't reading full anymore.

I have a 2004 explorer 4x4 that I bought about 18 months ago. About 3months ago the ABS light started coming on at random. If I press hard on the brakes it will go off, but come back on a few minutes later.

About a month ago my brake warning light started coming on and off randomly as well. However, the brakes are working fine.

About 2 weeks ago my cruise control has quit working.

Is this all due to that part? Or is the brake warning light something different? Also I am not a mechanic where would that master switch be that needs to be replaced?

Thanks

Welcome aboard!!

I would start by checking the brake fluid. The symptoms you describe point to low brake fluid. If the brake fluid is low, the cruise will not work.

Good luck with the fix.

Please keep us posted as feedback helps others reading this post looking for a fix to the same or similar issue!

brake fluid was the 1st thing I went to with no luck...really hate to pay the $80 to put it on diagnostics

Just some additional info to those of you who are like me and are mechanally challenged. I too just replaced my cc switch....and yes, the photo in this thread is the right one for a 2002 Explorer. HOWEVER I was actually given the option of 2 of the same switch by my Ford dealer. The first was simply the switch: cost was $38 bucks and is labeled Motorcraft part #SW6349. The second switch packet contained the switch plus a harness and was labeled Motercraft #SW6350 (1L1Z-9F924-AA). Cost $16. It was this second packet I actually needed. Not because it was cheaper but because it had the harness (I like to refer to it as an adapter). If you purchase only the switch it will not plug back into your existing harness. Amazon.com has both and only $16 plus tax. The nice thing with amazon too is that you can input your exact model into their system and it will verify the correct part number for you. Total replacement time for me was a whopping 5 minutes. Not bad for a guy who can't walk and chew gum at the same time!

Good fix

+1 for the brake switch on the master cylinder as a cruise fix. I took my 2003 into the dealer about 3 years ago(Dobbs Ford Memphis) and for the roughly 100.00 diagnosis fee was told the module was bad and the part was around 350.00 to replace. It didn't warrant that expense, so for three years now, I've done without. Bought the switch and in less than 5 minutes, the cruise is back. I'm so pissed that the dealers try and cheat a customer like that. They'd fair much better just being honest, and I'd take my vehicles in more. I guess I understand, as they still snookered me out of the diagnosis fee for literally no work, as even their diagnosis was wrong, so they must not have tried.

I too have the same problem. I just bought my Explorer. On the way to work the ABS light came on. On the way home I tried to use the cruise control and it didn't work. The light doesn't even go on when you turn the key to the on position for system check. I've read this thread and ordered the SW6349 from Amazon for $19.95 plus S&H. I hope this fixes it! I care more about the stupid ABS light then I do about the Cruise control though. I will post an update when the part gets here in 3 -5 days!

EDIT:
I went ahead and ordered both SW6349 & SW6350 just incase. What the hell, It was only another $12 and comes with the extra wire harness. I believe I read that the harness has 2 fuseable links (inline fuses) in it to help fix a FIRE hazzard recall with this switch!!!

Ok. so I put in the SW6349 (I'm still waiting on the SW6350) and it is working so far. No ABS light.

I got my Cruise Control working but now I'm not sure it wasn't working before. I got frustrated when after putting in the new switch, the CC wouldn't go on when I hit the "ON" button. So I stared hitting them all!!! I found out a few things you may not know:

(this is on a 2004 Explorer 4.6L)

1. The Cruise Control light does NOT light up when the key is turned to the "ON" position for system check (dash lights check).

2. The Cruise Control will not go on at all if you are under 30mph.

3. (here's the kicker) To turn on the Cruise Control when above 30mph, hit the "ON" AND the "SET" button at the same time. Just hitting "ON" will NOT turn on Cruise Control.

So my Cruise Control works, but I'm not sure it was ever broken. Judging by other peoples posts, mine was probably working intermittently.

When the SW6350 gets here, I will use the fused extension it comes with so I don't have to worry about fires. When orderingit says that SW6349 is correct for my year, NOT SW6350. So the fire thing probably isn't for my year. better safe than sorry though. Hope this helps!

Just wanted to tell everyone. My 2004 Explorer Limited had the ABS light coming on, and the cruise wouldnt work much of the time. I replaced the sensor on the master cylinder (part #3L329F924AB) and its working perfectly now. $48.00 at Ford Dealer here in Lincoln NE.

Thanks a bunch!

if it ever happens again the SW6349 is correct part for 20 bucks from amazon.com

ok.... Got the SW6350. The harness doesn't fit be cause it's made to adapt from one type of connector (probably the ones that were causing fires) to the newer type (SW6349). The switch that comes with the SW6350 looks exactly like the SW6349, but there are no markings on it. So it may be the right one, but since I ordered both, I'm using the SW6349. The SW6350 was only $12. So if it IS the correct switch (sensor), That would be the cheapest way to fix it.

If any one lives near Brookfield, WI and wants to try out the SW6350 switch, You can have it so long as you let us know if it worked. The threads are the same and so is the connector. I am NOT going to mail it, so don't ask. Pick up only.

Ok... to correct myself, no LIGHT will go on when you just hit the "ON" button. Not till you set the speed does the light come on. There is no indicator light for the cruise control being activated.

First time posting...

Cruise control stopped working on my 2003 Explorer 2WD 4.0L...

Replaced the "cruise control cutout switch" (sits on the master cylinder) with a Motorcraft SW6349 from a LARGE online retailer for $19.62.

Problem solved!

Welcome to the forum glad to hear we helped.

My cruise Will intermittently not work, maybe once or twice a month.doesn't seem to relate to any other issue, no abs light or specific symptom that causes this. Would it mess with my advancetrac instead of abs? That has been acting up every blue moon for a second or two w/no codes.
The thing that baffles me is I can shift to N cut and restart the truck while moving and it'll work fine..
I've even had it just quit during use (may have hit brakes)when trying to resume.

Anyone think this could be my gremlin? For $20 its worth a try but i really hate to just throw parts at it...

I see on my 05 its on the bottom side of master cylinder....ugh

Just a quick thanks to you guys for helping me clear up this issue with my ford Explorer. I pulled the b 1440 error code with a abs code reader and started my research. After reading this thread I realized that the cruise was not working (my wife uses this car to drive in the city). a quick purchase online for the switch (25.00) and the light is off and all is back to normal!

Hey all, just registered to say "thanks!!" I found this thread with my old friend Google! I had the same issues with my 03 Moutaineer...cruise not working and the ABS light coming on and off. I purchased the part (3L3Z9F924-AB) from my local dealer ($38), and it worked!! No ABS light and the cruise has worked everytime I try it now!! Thanks again for all the great info!

I just bought a 03 XLT Explorer and the cruise light turns on but the truck just coasts. I went by a local junk yard and grabbed a new sensor for the master cylinder, but the cruise still just coasts. The cruise light stays on unless I press on the brakes. No ABS light, and as far as I know they ABS is working just fine.

What else should I look at?
