Getting ready to replace O2 sensor on my 98 explorer. Bank 1 Sensor 1. It looks like it could be a PITA. I plan on removing the center console and doing it from the top. Honestly i dont see how you could do it any other way! I think i could remove the sensor from the bottom but there is no way i could reach the plug without removing the access panel under the console. I'd like some tips or anything you got to help me with this job. I've heard these can get stuck in pretty good.

On my 99 Sport w/4.0 SOHC I recently did the r/s front O2 sensor. I removed the wheel, the splash shield, & removed the screws from the rear 1/2 of the plastic inner fender panel & bent it forward to gain access. I was able to remove the O2 sensor & get at the plug connector through the wheel opening.

I've been hitting all four of mine with Kroil for about a week now in preparation for replacing them all. I was under the car for something else two night ago so I gave the front driver's side one a try since it was easy to get to. It broke free pretty easy for a O2 sensor, especially since it was an original sensor on a 98. So I'd recommend that you hit yours with a good penetrant for a while before you attempt them. Also fork over the $$ for a good quality O2 sensor wrench/socket and make sure that it is fully seated before you begin as you don't want to round off the corners on the sensor.

my goal is to have all 4 of mine replaced before the upcoming weekend is over, and then write up how I got to all 4.
