But its a serious no-no for anyone to be outside the vehicle when winching, your friend should of stayed clear, if the cable breaks you or someone else could be seriously injured or dead.

You make a good point. I believe someone was killed out west a few years back from a hook breaking on a tow line and hitting him in the head. Definitely an avoidable tragedy. At the very least, someone should have put some sort of damper on the cable.
Anyway, nice recovery job. Doesn't look like they had any business being that deep with stock trucks. Always nice to be the guy to drag someone out of trouble!
