Hello All.... I have a cracked rear ABS tone ring. Several questions.... Would this be covered under the 5yr/60k powertrain warranty? Second, I know you have to pull the axle shaft, how is this done? I'm pretty good mechanically and just need to follow directions. Thanks for your help.

Probably not covered, since it's brakes. I had the same thing and just let Ford do it. It's a $40 part and a flat rate of about $300 in labor. I was out of the dealer in less than 3 hours. If you want to mess with it I suggest buying the 2006 Service Repair Manual DVD on ebay....it's about $30. That should tell you how to do it.

Wow thats weird, a cracked tone ring! Ford needs to step it up - the 2002s and early 2003 models are cracking their coil springs at a regular rate (theres a thread about this). I mean seriously, its a tone ring - how can you mess up engineering that?

Anyways, besides that rant session I just had -- I think that the tone ring would be covered. If its anything like the 2nd gen's, then the tone ring is used to calculate shift points of the transmission - hence that would pretty much make it an integral part of the 'drivetrain'. Again, this is an assumption as I've never had the pleasure to mess around with an independent rear suspension Explorer.

I had no idea that the ABS tone ring had anything to do with calculating transmission shift points. I thought it was just brake related. Good to know.

Not sure which part of the warranty covers it but, I had one replaced about a year ago. It was only 1 1/2 years old though and still under the 3yr/36k bumper-to-bumper warranty. I was told that the ring is very thin metal, and that the replacement ring is much thicker and less likely to crack. Good luck.

Well I took it to the dealer. Cost was $158.00 for part, labor, oil change. I thought it was a bargain! BTW, labor was $102.00
