Rear axle noise

I'm getting a noise from the rear axle. Sounds like the gears meshing together. I'm wondering where abouts you would check for the oil level. Do you take the ABS Sensor out or is there another spot to check.. I have a 98 Sport, 4x4 , 4.0 Sohc... The noise gets louder the faster you go and diminishes the slower you go.. Thought i'd check the levels first.. Thanks guys

There is a fill plug on the back of the axle/diffferential housing. It takes a 3/8" socket drive to remove it.

Sometimes those plugs get seized up. Good luck getting it out if it's been there for a long time without being removed.
