Has anyone ever replaced the rear bumper cover labeled #6 in the picture? I did some light towing, and the plastic cover/protector got a little twisted. The part is only $60. But I dont know how it attaches or what kind of problems I may encounter. If anyone has redone this part or knows what is involved, all input would be welcome... thanks....

Dead Link Removed

Its part #6

It just snaps in. The bumper has small rectangular holes that the plastic pieces (5 and 6) snap into.

Will the "new" one fit as snug as the factory one? Also, how hard is it to remove the facory one?

A flat screwdriver and 3 minutes and the old one should come off.

I have a related question:

Will the Item #6 in the picture fit a Sport bumper ?

My Sport bumper is painted instead of chrome, and the #6 plastic piece is not as wide as the one shown in the picture. I backed into a big rock, and the wider plastic piece would hide the damage that I did if it would fit.

Sport and 4door bumpers are the same as far as I've seen, as are 91-94 and 95-97 rear bumpers for the most part (except for the trim).

I know what your talking about dog, i've seen some that are short and some that are long, i'm not positive on which ones come on what, but mine is long

Mine is like this. There is a ding from the rock I backed into just to the right of the plastic piece.

The long plastic piece would cover it; but it would suck to spend the $60 if it won't fit for some weird reason.

I don't see why it wouldn't fit, i have a '97 sport

I think the difference is that you have a chrome bumper (like the XLT version) and mine is painted.

I may give it a try; I'm a mechanical engineer - I'll make it fit. ;)

hehe.... all my rear bumper has is # 1-3 none of that plastic stuff or the step :)

Yeah, but you don't have a roof either ;)

only because my truck is special.... the only plastic trim on my truck is those impact strips on the lower portion of the doors....... and they are actually also the only emblem on htere that says explorer... i took the rear hatch emblems off, and the front doesnt have one as i have a billit grill.....

I thought I would update this in case anyone cares...

I bought the lower plastic piece from FPN. It is the longer one like on Yomie's truck. My original one is the shorter one. The only difference in mounting is that the longer trim piece has four rectangular tabs on each side that snap into the bumper holes. My short one only has two rectangular tabs per side, so I will need to make two more holes per side. Should take about an hour to make the holes because I'll need to file/dremel them to be rectangular (my GF says multiply all of my time estimates by 3 ;) )

I'll post before and after pics once I finally get around to doing it.

Sounds good! cant wait for pics

Dogfriend~ Did they have choices of color when you ordered? I have a white XLT with the graphite trim (i think thats the color), so i need to find that color.

No, I emailed Torrie asking what color choices they had, and only got one p/n back. The color looks to be the same as the original (graphite) except not faded by being exposed to the sun for 6 years. I'm replacing the top cover too, so I'm not really worried about the color match.

Cool, I have to keep that in mind when I get some money set away. What was the cost of the lower bumper and the upper bumper cover?
