so finally got to the root of my trouble I think - the rear driver side driveaxle or CV axle is shot. I can grab it and wiggle it all around by the inner CV joint - and it makes the clunking sound like it is not sitting tight anymore. Also explains my clunking thumping under load. Biggest clue was the thick grease sprayed all over the underside of the truck around where the inner CV joint spins.
Got to be it! I cant see the torn boot because of the mess and could rotate it fully.
Any tips on changing these? anything else to look for before doing this? can a new boot and grease buy time?
biggest downer is no one has it in stock or available to order anywhere near me except ford for $400!
