I think there are a few of you who can give me some great advice on this and I really need it, since I just sized up to 315/70s

I've read the article on this page about the rear axle swap, but that's slightly more than I wanted to do.

What I was curious about is if anyone has purchased any of the Rear Disc Brake Conversion Kits for their 91-94 and how well they work? What about the best price..?
I know Explorer Express makes one for $600, but that seems a little expensive. I saw someplace that is called TSM or something that said they have them for Ford Trucks, but I have never heard of them before. Any break advice would be greatly appreciated, since every time I go, sooner or later I seem to need to stop Dead Link Removed Go figure.
Thanks
Mat

Matt,

Currie enterprises sells the 98 and up Explorer discs to use on various axles they sell. They dont guarantee that they will fit the early Explorers, so I took all of the measurements and It looked ok so I ordered it. Unfortunatly with working on my engine and regular life I havent installed them yet, but it should be just like Brett Grooms article on this site, the only difference I see is that Currie supplies a weld on bracket for the tube/hose connection, and you get all new parts. Cost me $419 (which included hoses) + I bought some parking brake cables from a local dealer for another $85.
Its my next mod to be installed, then onto gears, and onto tire carrier, and on to winch, and on to......

Mat,

The disc brake swap is probably the best mod I have done to my truck. I happened to find a good used setup for $150 for everything. I also had to buy the intermediate cable for a 2door from Ford for $17. (I have a 4door intermediate cable if you need one). The setup I got came from a wrecked 97 V8 4door. Steve is right about the caliper hose mounting brackets. With the new kits, you get brackets, whereas I made a set out of strap steel. (Probably cost me less than $1 to cut, drill, and weld them onto my truck.) Anyway $500-$600 sounds about right for a new setup. I just spent that on my 65 Mustang for a new rear disc setup from Wilwood. You may want to check to see if they make a kit for Explorers.

Let me know if you need any help.

You know, come to to think of it, I think i Have seen Currie adevertise Rear Disc Brake conversions, but I have never called on them for the Explorer. $419 sounds pretty fair to me, I just didn't want to be up in the $5-6 range, because that seemed a little to much. Steve, I'd be greatful if you would keep me informed on how the install goes, and how the brakes work when you're done!
Thanks
Mat

Matt, It will be a while before they go on. I have the engine out and at the shop. At the pace I get things done on my vehicle it could be May, although I hope to have my engine in by the end of the month, with a big tax bill to pay, and a laid off wife (she makes the real money),funds for my my engine project were scarce.
Im back on track now and the next mod will be the rear discs. I will let you know how it goes.

Ford motorsports has a kit for the 8.8 truck axle. It is identical to the set on the 95 or later Explorer with disk brakes. All parts are new, and it includes brake pads and all mounting hardware. All you need to buy are hoses and the parking brake intermidate cable. Price is $349 on the SVO parts site.
Sorry I don't have the URL.

Hope this helps!

I would bet that the FMS kit is the same that Currie sells- although the FMS kit seems to be $30.00 CHEAPER. @#$%!!!

I can't find the disk brake kit for 360?

If anyone has purchased and installed this kit, can you post your thoughts on the quality and completeness of the kit? Also please list any problems you may have had. This is to help my decision to purchase the kit.

Thanx

I have the kit from Currie (which I am sure is the same as the FMS) which I have not installed yet. The kit is OEM quality, with everything except the parking brake cables. Bretts article on this site covers the install and what you should expect. The install is the same except that the parts he installed were used, but otherwise no difference.

I'm a new member and I'm interested in this Motorsport kit for my wife's '94 4dr 4x4. I had one dealer call the hotline and they said it would all bolt up. My questions are, 1) it looks like I only need the cables from a '95 and up 4dr as this is a '94 and the front cables should be the same, right? 2) I see mention of getting a later Master Cylinder. Why is there reference made for the '96 w/o speed control? We have speed control on this. 3) I had another dealer check the anti lock stuff and its supposed to be the same, but my last question is regarding a residual pressure valve. Is there one? I know on my '65 Mustang I had to get rid of the residual valve when I converted to disc's because it would keep the brakes locked if I didn't. Also, the '80's Mustangs are supposed to modify the prop/shuttle valve and remove that spring and flapper because that is the residual valve.

Is that all there is? Oh yea, brake hoses, but has anyone actually bought that Motorsport kit on and actually installed it in a '94? What were the extra parts?

thanks peterb
