Both my rear interior door handles are broken. The handles themselves broke. I know of 3 other Explorers this has happened to and was wondering how common it was.

Yup.. back left one.

It obviously is dependant on usage too...Are your back seats used by kids alot?

Yeah.. but they're all illegitimate. So does that count?

LOL:D

No, no kids in the back of mine.

One broken here on a 97. When someone wants to get out I just roll down their window and tell them to open it from the outside.

i just picked one up from a junker and replaced it.

All 4 of my families X's have no broken handles in them at all, and they were used by the cops, who are really hard on handles...The front bar was broken off on one when we got it, but other than that, no problems:D

A drunk buddy broke both rears, on different occasions though.

Yeah, the same friend broke both of mine. He just happens to be who rides in the back 90% of the time. He did offer to pay for them, but I don't blame him.

No broken handles for me, but then again, I removed my back seats to run some amp wiring and never put them back in. (Just too lazy.) :D

Driver, front passenger and rear left passenger handles broke while under warranty. After warranty the front passanger and rear left handles broke again. Ended up replacing the entire door panels with new ones from the junk yard and have been extremely gentle with them ever since.

My friends just think I'm being extremely considerate when I make a point to open doors for them, especially when they're drunk. But I'm really just afraid they'll tear the handles off when they close the doors.

Do you mean the door handles that move to open the door or the fixed handle that isn't supposed to move?

i in my case i am talking about the inside handles. i have not has a problem with the outside one's yet...knock on wood.

Both my rears have broken, one broken handle and the other broke a tooth on the plastic gears. I scored 4 off ebay.

I wonder if there isn`t something that would fit but be stronger??
Just by chance I found out that my old 88 mustang had the exact same outer handles as the Tempo of similiar years BUT THE TEMPO ONES WERE METAL! Broke both my cheap plastic outside handles on the stang and replaced them with the Tempo ones. Perhaps there is a metal inner handle that would fit from another vehicle? Or is it a pipe dream to find anything metal anymore?

My left back seat door handle broke but...

...I just say to my guess friends that is child proof!

(Too cheap to fix:D )

Left Rear inside door is broken. Those suckers just weren't made to last. I heard they aren't hard to fix at all. I guess I am just too lazy to do anything about it. In a way its kinda good that it does not open on the inside. My 9 year old won't accidentally open the door and block on coming traffic. Well, that's how I look at it until I get out of my laziness mode. :)

I recently replaced both of my rears. One broke within 5 times of using it.
