The noise is terrible between 40-70 mph I cant take it. I am looking to get a used one and found a 06 with low miles will it work. Is it hard to rebuild it my self? whats the cost of parts? And how do i find if i got a limited slip and what my gears are.

Gear Noise?

How do you know it is gear noise? How many miles have been driven since the noise began? If not too many, it could be wheel bearing noise.

Few everyday Mechanics are capable of rebuilding a rear end (changing gear). If you have never done it yourself, yes, it is VERY "hard" to do. The vehicle ID tag has the information on it regarding whether limited slip, and the gear ratio.

If you replace the center section entirely with another, the gear ratio must MATCH that of the front axle (assuming it is a 4X4). imp

its a 2wd and it only happens when you push the gas once you let off from 45-70 the noise goes away any other input

I have an 03, i just got an 08 rear, looks alittle different, the axels from the 03 fit into the 08 rear, my 03 has only one mounting bracket on the front of the rear, and the 08 has 2 brackets,

I will post back tommorrow if it all fits

the front or diff case is different between gen 3 and gen 4. the only problem i would think you have is pinion angle. which cant be shimmed down but not up....

you lost me here?

It is the rear diff 2003 2wd 4.0

on the top of the 03 rear there is an abs sensor mounted to the top of the pumpkin. on the 08 there is no hole to mount the sensor, I can drill and tap a new hole, but i don not know if there is an exciter ring inside the 08

the 08 did not have a tone ring, I did remove the tone ring from the 03 and put the ring on the 08 rear, also I had to drill for the sensor and tap for the bolt, looks like this will work. I will install tommorrow.

rear is in and works perfect.
