Hey I'm just curious, is the differential housing cast alluminum?

Did they change the axle on the newer Explorers? I got 180K on my 2000 and it makes no noise whatsoever. I did know a guy who had its Explorer's axle lock up, but mine has been great...so far.

Yes the newer Explorers (3rd generatoins) have an independant rear suspension which incorporates a stubby axle housing - much like the front axle on the 2nd generation 4wd/AWD except a lot shorter.

I wouldn't even call it an axle housing. It's more like a differential inside a housing, with no axle tubes. Stick the inner CV joints right into the differential spider gears and that's about what you've got.

AFAIK, all independent rear suspensions are set up that way (for rear or all wheel drives at least). A live axle in a 2000 is a completely different beast.
