Like many others I have had the noisy rear end for the past 15K or so. Today it got very bad I drove the truck home it made it to the drive way and exploded  .

I now have a HOLE in the case. :fire:

The truck is an 02 with 104K on it. Does any one have a guess on what this will cost? Should I take it to Ford or should I bring it to a local garage?

Any one else have this happen?

A hole? I am guessing in the differential cover? You could take it to a good independent shop -- but just make sure they can rebuild differentials well. Also, it seems like whatever Ford does, they can't fix the problem. I wonder what happend to yours

Thats interesting. Can you post some pictures of this "hole".

I will post a picture of the hole later today. The hole is in the right side of the case, not in the cover.

I got a price for a used one $450, from a 04 with 43k. I am still waiting to hear from ford but I am thinking 2k-3k for a new one.

WOW Ford just called me back 1200 with a 12/12. I most likely will go with ford as I do not have the time to change it out myself.

See if ford will split the cost with you. The rearend should have lasted longer than that. I know Chrysler will do it. They did it for me on my Neon. Just sound very upset. Ford has an online complaint department. They will email you back in a day or so.

I hope that new one doesn't make any noise. Maybe ask them if you can get a newer explorer (03-05) axle and put it in there

Amazing how vehicles seem to self-destruct shortly after the 100k-miles marker ;)

Truck went to Ford today, they have no idea how long it will take. They said the new rear end comes from a 3rd party vendor??

Any one know who is making the rear ends for Ford? I asked and was told that they don't know just that it is a 3rd party vendor.

Not sure who makes it but I'll bet it comes from Canada :us:

Update

Got my truck back today it took one week and cost $1175.85 with $75 of that being the tow.

The truck is now makes no noise, I hope it stays that way.

Not pretty.... Your only choices really are the dealer or a salvage yard, it look like. I don't know of anyplace else to find them....

$1100 isn't bad in my view if it's a brand new complete differential. I would pay that to end the whinning in mine if I knew it would last.

I was happy with the price. My only problem is that a rear end should not break with 104K this is NOT new technology, rear ends have been around for over 100 years.

I would get yours looked at or looked at again, mine whinned for 15K or so.

so exactly what caused that crack?

cauz from ur pictures, it looks like the carrier was the problem. but if the carrier caused the crack, that means the carrier had severe play which probably meant the bearing caps came lose.
