i have a 97 ranger stock rear end w/open diff. I found a 8.8 out of a 99 X with posi trac. First question would $225 be to much for it?And how hard would the conversion be?

You can double check that price with junkyards in your area. Try www.car-part.com

Dropping the rear axle and swapping in a replacement should take around 6 hours all said and done, with common hand tools, floor jack and a couple sets of jackstands.
I would drain the replacement, remove the axles, check the axle bearings and change the seals. If you are buying the "limited slip" try to get some type of warranty as the clutch packs on these do not last forever. Also be aware of the fact the limited slip uses a synthetic diff fluid and you must add the friction modifier for the clutches.

Except its going to take much longer since he will have to weld mounting plates to the top of the axle as the ranger is spring over and the explorer is spring under. The shock mounts might also be a problem as well.

That seems fairly high for an 8.8 but who knows with the prices on them as their always changing. I've seen them as low as $75 and as high as $300.

You will need to buy new spring perches. They weld on top of the axle. Superlift makes them with shock mounts.

That price seems high as they are a dime a dozen for that rear end.

Make sure it's the same ration as your current front end.

If you've got a welder or know one, it can easily be done in a day. Mine only took me a few hours.

thanks for all info called around and most junkyards around here want 400 plus for one with a posi and since there needs to be welding i won't be able to do it  no welder no access to one but thanks anyways guys
