1999 Ford Explorer
Hi guys,

First Time Poster and I have a question....Earlier this year I bought a very nice 1999 Ford Explorer, v8, awd, Eddie bauer pkg. The prior/original owner installed brush guards, heavy duty overhead rack, custom wheels and tires, and a 2-inch lift. It all looks very cool and runs great. I'm very happy with it (but a little disappointed on the mileage).

I didn't notice it at the time I bought it but later I noticed that the front end sits a little higher than the rear end (or the rear end sits a little lower than the front end). I've read that this model year had a rear load-leveling suspension. Could that have something to do with rear end sitting lower that the front?

Thanks,

DanM

Rear spring get week over time on thease you can either do shackles or add a leaf, there are many threads on this and stickys. Even f150 springs.

I recommend doing an add-a-leaf first. This adds an additional leaf spring to the leaf packs to correct some of the sag. It will slightly stiffen the ride. The shackles work by lowering the point at which the leaves are mounted, allowing more articulation. This could further wear out your rear leaf springs over time if you haven't already added an additional leaf to stiffen the pack. Good luck!

I recommend a set of rear monroe coilover "load adjust" shocks to correct the sagging. around 90.00 for a pair from amazon.

This is much easier than removing the leaf packs. I've been using them for over a year. They flex just fine

Thanks for the feedback. Monroes looks like the direction I'll go in. Question, would the weak rear springs come about from a lot of towing or towing with too much weight on the tongue?

You mentioned a 2" lift being installed. I wonder how the rear was lifted.
