rear-end slip

when i come to a complete stop in my 1998 explorer there is like a slip in the rear-end or the rear-end is catching up to the stop. hard to explain and then when you take off it does the same thing. you cant hear it but you can feel it. does anyone have any ideas? thank you in advance

Well it can't be that the rear end is slipping. There's nothing in there to slip, just gears. Even a differential that's "limited slip" doesn't really slip. Transmission, transfer case, u-joints... ?

yeah its not a slip. like i said its hard to explain. its like something is falling into place when you stop and then you feel it again when you take off and this doesnt happen every stop or go. like i said you dont hear it you only feel it.

maybe a rear brake caliper is sticking? do you have disks in the rear? if you've got drums, remove the drum and check for brake fluid or axle seal leaks, also check that the shoes aren't worn and at the end of their adjustment.

ok i just went and climbed underneath it. i could move the rear differential slightly with one hand back and forth. like i said slightly ; not a inch or so side to side. is the slight looseness normal?

when you say pumpkin i assume your talking about the rear-end , right? its not the rear-end , its the rear transfer case

I'm not sure if I'm following this correctly, but try tightening the U bolts that hold the rear axle to the springs.

so you can actually move the transfer case with your hand? did you check the mounting bolts?
