Now that I have two new rear wheel bearings I can hear the noise coming from the rear. How concerned should I be? It is not really loud. Will it possibly go for years without breaking down?

I hear it the most when I am coasting at low speed.

make sure your rear tires aren't worn first.

I just bought my Ex and the past owner only replaced the front tires.
There was a serious whine from the rear end and it was due to the extreme difference in rotating mass sending the 4 wheel drive into a tizzy. I threw 2 new tires on the rear and problem was gone.

By the way mine only happened when i would coast between 40 and 55 mph.

My tires are only a few months old...

It is pretty subtle, I think I am going to take the drive until it breaks approach. Hopefully the noise will get worse or it will give some other warning signs before it goes out.

Edit: found the info.

Doesn't seem like it should make any difference, but I changed the diff oil recently and things got quieter back there on my 2002. The old oil was pretty dark, almost black. The diff had stamped on it "Synthetic Oil Only" so I assume that was what was already in it. Getting the drain plug out required a little heat (just a minute) with a propane torch. I didn't have the right wrench, so I used a chisel that was about 3/4" wide like a wrench in the drain plug. I used a vacuum syringe from autozone to put the new synthetic (Mobil 1 gear oil) in. Took about 1.5 quarts. Relatively easy job.

There is some kind of additive it is supposed to have. I had mine done right after I bought the car and it eliminated the shudder it had. The whine is still there but it is not enough to bother me.
