Rear hatch lock

I am having an issue with the rear hatch lock on my 1995 Eddie Bauer. While you are driving you keep hearing the lock mechanism clicking and door ajar light cycles on and off. Interior lights come on when door ajar l\is lit and rear wiper stops working. Ideas?

sounds not so much like the lock as the latch. my first thought would be to check and see if it is actually engaging on the catch on the truck itself (can you wiggle the door by hand or does it close snugly?) you may need to lubricate the catch mechanism to allow it to operate smoothly again if its not.
