Does someone here know how to take the plastic panel off the rear hatch of a 2001 Explorer Sport? I want to put some hi-temp mastic on the rear panel to deaden the vibrations. I've got the passenger side completed and it works phenominally!!

Thanks!

I don't know about the newer models, but mine was a son of a *****. There are these weird looking hooks that hold the whole thing in place. There are two screws that should be near the strap to pull it down with. There is also a screw right beside the door lock mechanism. Make sure to pull out all of the outside retaining clips and be very careful with the hook like objects holding it in. They are very easy to break(I broke 2 of them).

I know you can buy those clip thingy's from Ford. Can those plastic hooks be replaced if they're broken?

Also, Which way do I lift to 'unhook them'. Up? Left? Right? I don't know if they vary from year to year, but they sure are a pain in the a$$!

Peace,

Jordan

I don't think they can because they were molded to the panel and it left a 2 in crack in the front of the panel. They are all different. The front clips slides backwards, the right clips slide to the left and the left clips slide to the right. Be very careful with the back ones that are close to the door locks, you have to kind of push them up and to the front of the truck. I am considering that you have the hatch lifted when I gave you the directions. Yes, it is a real big pain in the ass.

When we did mine it was some what easy. Well it is easier when you have a pannel tool. The install bay had them and they worked great. I always broke then when I did it before using the tool. I recommend getting the pannel removal tool and then try and get manual or stop by the Ford dealer and see if they can give you some tips or if they can print you off a page or to of their master manual for the hatch.

Thanks Black Magic...I think I'll do that on my way home tonight.

Peace,

Hey Black Magic,

I notice you've got the 2001 Sport. Is the removal the same as what was previously described? I think there are only 2 screws to remove (by the handle)...is that correct?

Thanks Again!

Yes, There is a couple of screews and then all plastic clips. Be careful not to bend the plascic or you can break or get white bend marks.
