The pre-98 wiper motors use different wiring(one less) and would be an issue for swapping. My 99 has a 93 hatch and matching 93 parts, cut/epoxied 95-97 lights, with a 97 wiper motor and key cylinder, and 1999 wiring. It can all be done, but it gets complicated.

Get an entire 98-01 Explorer/Mountaineer hatch, it will be plug and play for your 99.

Even 02-03 Sport hatches will work, but that creates more issues with wiring, the wipers etc.

Awesome, Thanks! I will post this up when I do it!

I'd have to have a look at ours.. (which is 20 miles north of here on 4 stands while I wait for transmission parts...sorry)

I think most of the issues has to be the upper mounts. I'm pretty sure we removed the hatch by prying down carefully on the headliner and removing the bolts. If someone has a photo of the upper mounts and the adjustments? That should help make things clear. Looks like we might have gotten lucky with the alignment.

When you obtained yours, did it work out with the mounts to the roof? Or did the replacement have the hinges removed and you're reusing the ones that came with it from the start? This is pretty odd indeed. It should work, but those upper brackets seem to be the source of the headache.

Be sure if you get another gate: Upper hinges! LOL! Make sure they are unbolted from the roof and not the gate itself. That might help things line up.

edit: Forgot to mention:

Switch in the back is a door lock switch. Pretty sure it's standard.

The heated rear window defogger sometimes will break off the tab with the wires on it. Fairly sure auto parts stores (or the stealership) should have a repair kit for it.

Update

So I went to the junk yard yesterday and went threw about 30-40 different explorers of all types. Finally found an explorer with a door that worked perfectly on the car it was one. Did not have the glass but that was no big deal. I didn't honestly pay attention to the color at the time I thought it was "close" but the Eddie Bauer edition im guessing had upgraded colors similar to the mercury package. Turns out I found an exact match of my car. Same year as well.

So after I got home later that night I went a pulled the glass off of my Mountaineer.

I mounted them together and I had a good starting point.

Next Day I set everything up for the swap.

Swaping over the main wire hireness was easy. The one of the Drivers side. They are they same exact piece. However on the EB edition of the 99 explorer it had a similar gromet setup like the harness of the other side. The mountieer just has a pinhole with rubber grommet.

My Solution from parts I cut out from the junkyard and my own on the truck.

So the next step is the decals. Brand name decal simple enough just 4 bolts

Next part was the bottom. While the shape on both is exactly the same. The mountieer has extra trim holes the the ford does. So I took some Metal sheers and razor knife and cut them off clean.

I used silicone to glue the top part of the decal on.

Only 2 things wrong with it.

The windshield wiper isn't working for whatever reason.

Fluid is making is way thru to the back tubing but not coming out the little hole.

Any advice? Fuses? They go bad? etc.?

Also last thing. Picked up a bug guard from an explorer. On long highway drives hoping this helps.

Looks pretty damn good!!

Rear wiper is likely fused. Could be fuse, switch...wiring. The fluid coming out the hose might just be a clog in the line, pinched line. We modified ours a bit due to the hose not being long enough. If you remove the hose from where it connects to the door/hatch it should come out with some decent pressure. Wouldn't be unheard of for the nozzle to plug up as well.

Motor's not running at all? or attempting to? Might need to pull up a wiring schematic and trace things back..All things considered, rear wiper's pretty much not vital. Nice to have mind you! But not vital.

Can't help much on that one due to the motor wiring being a different type then the one on ours. (95-98....and we had to modify ours to work with the 98.) Yours uses a slightly different configuration sense the license plate lights use what would be one of the wiper motor wires on ours.

How'd you get the badges off and were they harmed? My 01 doesn't have them, it is the original hatch however, and I'd like to put them back on, and the local JY has a couple EBs in stock.

NIce job

I think my previous bugshield was that model. Didn't flutter on the highway. Hail took a chunk out of it. My replacement one I got from the junkyard does not feel as solidly mounted as my old one. I snagged some replacement mounting hardware on my last junkyard trip, so hopefully that helps. :snicker: wanna trade?

Thank you, Im honestly lucky how well it turned it out but honestly. It was pretty easy all in all. Did it mostly all by myself. I have been working on cars less then a year. It feels nice to do all of this work.

What do you mean by fused? A real fuse or a stuck fused?

Yeah the fluid is going all the way back there when you press the rear wiper button on the dash. It was dripping down the side hatch. But when you press all hooked up, its not coming out. my previous one did not work. Could be a fuse or something. I don't know. When you turn the dial im getting nothing. No noise or anything.

I used a piece of fishing line and used a back a forth motion once the fishing line line is behind it. No harm to either piece. There will be residue glue when taking off but not when putting on. Might wanna clean the backs up though first before applying.

Thank you, It came out pretty well. My bumper is crooked. I need to get new brackets or bend mine back. lol

It was a good find. No mounting hardware though. I used 3/4" bit driver self tappers or something close. Don't remember the length. But took a bit to center it. Not exactly where the middle Point on the inside is. Pretty firm. And I think makes it look better.

On my 99 I had before I wrecked it, the bumper was crooked, I just sat on it on that corner and it worked, was that a bad idea? Probably, but the bumper is still okay so. I have the same problem with my hatch on mine, the wiper doesn't work, which it doesn't touch anyhow and the JY doesn't have any good wipers to choose from.

There's likely a fuse that goes to the rear wiper motor. I'm not sure if it's shared by the washer motor. Someone with my wiring understanding then I have should be able to lend a hand on that point.

Looks like a great job! Well planned out and it shows!

The 98-01 wiper motors suck. They seem to get stuck after a while and not work.

My first 98 and 99 trucks the rear wipers work fine. This recent 98 I bought the wipers don't do anything. It's usually about the motors or linkage etc, the parts are rather fragile.

Should I be able to move it by hand?

From certain positions you may be able to move the arm/motor by hand, but I believe it will not move by hand from the fully PARKED position, which is no doubt where it is now.

If I really wanted to figure out what's going on I would start by studying a wiring diagram and testing for power at the switch and the motor. Don't forget that the glass must remain closed in order for the wiper to work and that the power allows the wiper to only operate as an intermittent wiper, so motor operation is not constant. I appreciate your desire to get the rear wiper to work, but most of us agree that it's a lost cause. Good luck.

Thanks for the post teddy, Glad you shared your experience with me. Good to hear someones take on doing something similar. On that note I went ahead and took some pictures like you suggested to help everyone get the idea of whats going on.

Here are some extras info first.

My truck has the lock switch in the back. I don't know if this was a standard option or not. But shouldn't effect anything right as far as wiring? Would think it would go to the box then back. Any how wanted to share that.

The right rear ground copper piece has broken off the window. I pulled it out with plyers. Can't put it back on. But should be switching the hatch out hopefully anyway. Was curios if there was a way to fix this or new glass the only option. Just curious.

Okay so to keep my door ajar light from going off and my interior cab lights working correctly and the auto lock etc. I have to strap my latch down. Notice its only the rear left side. The latch on that side is bent. I will show photos soon.

This is the latch thats messed up and ive tried to fix.

Heres a few photos of the glass piece. Its all jacked up ass well.

Your Mountaineer is a twin to my 2000, even the Monterey model and I have the same issues with bent hinges/water leaks, good luck!!
