There is the famous oil leak from between the engine and transmission. It is relatively slow...maybe a drop or two per day. It leaks even when sitting for a long time with no start up (like a week or more). I know its not coming from the top of the engine, as I have replaced all of the gaskets up there (lower intake, valve covers, etc) and double checked.

My question is this....Is the oil level higher than the rear main seal, or lower? (with the engine off) If it was lower, I would guess that it would only leak while running or shortly after. If it was higher, I could see how it could leak through the rear main. So if it is lower...it must be the oil pan gasket. Is my logic flawed? I've been looking thru searched threads all afternoon, but haven't found one that addresses this specifically.

With the engine off, MOST of the oil should be in the pan and lower than the pan gaskets. Your logic is not flawed and changing the pan gaskets would be the first thing to try. Obviously, a rear main seal is more involved.

Good Luck - Dave.
