rear rotor problem

1997 XLT control trac 4wd
i need to replace the rear rotor on my 97 control trac 4wd. do i need a special tool to remove it? or should it just come off. i already tried pounding it with a hammer, but no luck. it looks like it is held on by that bolt in the middle? or should i hit it some more?

not 100% sure since i have never changed drums on an ex..but if u look at the peice u are working with and it looks like theres a bolt over the metal chances are that bolts gunna need to come out..aslong as ur not talking about the drive shaft

again dont know 100% but if it looks like it needs to come out chances are it does

anywho good luck and im sure someone else will be able to tell u for sure
 






if its a disc rotor, did you loosen the emergency brake? there is a rubber plug behind the dust shield and inside there is a little gear that backs off the emergency brake.
thats what was holding my rear rotors on.
then use something to pry the rotor off.

meaning i have to take the dust shield off also? there is no gear behind the wheel, and i did have the emergency brake off.

Those rotors are usually frozen onto the axle flange. Very tight tolerances. Whatever you do, don't hammer on the axle flange unless you use a soft hammer. I removed mine by prying on the rotor against the caliper bracket and hitting the axle flange with a plastic mallet. After I got it off, I used my dremel to polish the flange and put some anti sieze on it before I put the rotor back on. If you hammer the flange with a hard metal hammer, it will peen the flange over and you'll never get the rotor off. It will also make wheel installation/removal very difficult.
