Hi everyone,
Got a question. In the back of my Mountaineer, there appears to be a space for another speaker. I'm wondering has anybody tried to install a a speaker in their Explorer? I'm wondering if they have the same setup. If anyone has done this, let me know.

Thanks.:exp:

man what luck i just installed them in my empty slots. it sounds great. very loud if your in back! only problem is i cant find a place that sells 5x7 grills. lmk if you know of a place. also it was diffcult to cut out slots for speaker holes.

Great! so there is room at the rear door to put in two 5x7 speakers. From the looks of mine, it appears as if one of them is open, maybe the top of the line for my year had 5 speakers instead of four, but I would like to put some speakers back there, so I could have six.

:exp:

ya i have been told that orignally before they came off line they were going to place speakers there but ended up not doing it and instead put the speaker in holder that is there in instead. they never covered up the holes. yep they will fit but it is tough to cut the hole out trust me on that.

Am I understanding this correctly? In the back door (lift gate) there are holes behind the plastic to mount 2 more speakers?

no if you have a 4 door X the rear doors have an extra slot for speakers

In my Mountaineer, It appears that I have space in my back door (lift gate) for two speakers. I can see the space for one, I think the top-of-the-line for the 98's have five speakers, but it appears as if I can cut out the other space to put in a sixth speaker. When I lift up my back door, I can see one hole clearly, but as for the other, I will have to cut it, but it has ridges, almost inviting me to cut it :hammer:

The Explorer/Mounty never had speakers in the liftgate (5th door). The fifth speaker is a subwoofer which goes in the rear cargo area where the net pocket is, on the side.

People have talked about putting speakers in the hatch before, but you run into a few problems. The added weight will stress the liftgate supports/shocks. Also, the inside of the liftgate gets moisture, so the speakers would need to have sealed enclosures. Lastly, they'd rattle the heck out of the door!

and in addition to what Alec said, it would be a real pain in the ass to run the speaker wire to the hatch and then through the hatch.

i thought you were talking about the rear doors. not the hatch. theres no way i would waste my time or money putting speakers back there. anyways if you have a sub and then some say components would that not cancel out the sound anyways from the sub?

My Limited has that 5th subwoofer on the passenger side in the rear. Always gets stuff knocked against it, and begins rattling like crazy! Oh well, soon to finnish wiring in amp and put in 2 boxed 10's which can easily be removed for those trips to Cape Hatteras. :D

OK so what is good to put in the spot for the back passenger doors? Just a sub or mid range? I am totally clueless on audio so something that sounds nice for lower cost is my way. I love sound but just can't spend the price for the setup some of you all have. What do I need to do to mount some speakers there and what size of speaker and how do i connect it?
Thanks

I have the door panel off and would like to get the info so I can get my truck back together.
