Does anyone know the part number for the rear tailgate or hatch? Or the correct terminology for it? I have been searching auto parts online and can't find one.

It's called the Liftgate. Check fordparts.com

Just to get Ford's "official" part terminology. For example, Ford refers to the brake light pedal switch as the BOO

(Brake On/Off) or BPP (Brake Pedal Position) switch. WTH, should start a thread on this, wouldn't that be fun? ;)

Man, you don't want to be buying one of these new. is this for a 2dr or a 4dr Explorer?

it wont matter. 4 door and 2 door gates are the same

the only difference in gates as far as i know are 97 and down are different then 98-03. 97 and down have different shape in the tail lights, window, no license plate in the gate, and the bottom is curved different. even though 01-03 sports have the tupperware on the bottom, and wiper in the glass all 98 and up gates have no hole in them, you have to drill them yourself

oh, and the third brake light is different!

really? i just bought a 2dr tail gate w/out realizing it was from a Sport. i thought the Sport tailgates were different because they tapered in more at the bottom. if they're the same i can still use the one i purchased on my 4dr. can someone else verify this?

you can as long as the truck was a 98 and up going by what year your truck is in your aviator

I've got a 2000 xlt liftgate on my 97 sport, the wiring is different and i had to wire in the tag lights,

Oh and the edge that meets up with the side glass is different between the 97 and down and the 98 and up
