rear tires

ok my buddy was behind me when we were driving. he called me to say that both back tires were wobeling and the pass. side was the worst. so i jaked it up. now when i grab the tire and pull towrds me the tire move about 3/16'' - 1/4'' on both sides. now would that be bad if theres that much play and what do you think it could be

yep, c-clips.. and while your already in there, spider gears wouldn't be a bad idea.

hang there boys, before you tare your axle open, some side to side movement of the axle-shafts is ok, i'd say maybe an 1/8th of an inch, however if your wheels are wobbling as you say, worn down c-clips will not cause that, they will maybe cause some shifting in turns or some play sideways of the rear as your going down the highway, wheels WOBBLING will be caused by including, possibly bent axle shaft, bent wheels, but not c-clips, i'd check into it before opening the axle

but he said he could pull the wheel towards him, this means the axle was loose and only being retained by the brakes, in fact a good test would be to pull the brakes and see of the axle comes the rest of the way out

so if the tires are bent could i do that chalk line thing on both tires and rotate and take notes on the distince between the lines. or is that for something eles

Has someone been in this diff recently? Perhaps someone that didn't know what they were doing?
3/16 to 1/4 inch is way too much movement. I agree that some movement is to be expected, perhaps as much as 1/8th, I would be concerned at anything over that. I stand by opening up the differential and looking around inside there. You just might be surprised what you will find. If those clips did indeed fall off the axle end, theres going to be more damage in there than just replacing those clips and the spider gears I mentioned before.
A word of caution, be very careful with the cross pin locking bolt, the are notoriusly weak and break easily. Get yourself a replacement BEFORE opening this up and use it when/if you put it back together.

well wobbeling was how he said. i will jack all 4 tires off the ground and and put it in drive and see if i can see anything.i could have my brother driver my mounty and i follow in his car and see what it looks like from behind in action

take the wheels down to be balanced, I wouldnt recommend taking the explorer.

they'll see quite quickly if the wheels are bent

well i bought this about 3 months ago for $300.00 from a junkyard thats all the dameg it had and my macanic frend drove it and he was impresed with it and its driving when i first got it i do belive it has about 172,850 miles on it if that helps any

Cheaper/more plentiful JY parts for that front end, would be my guess as to why. I like the bumper better than what I have (mountaineer). Cleaner look. However ditch those cow catcher black bumper thingys

i still have the explorer but the moter blown and the mounty was going to be a parts macheine but easyer to just swop the front parts like grill, both headlights, both fog lights, and the bumper toke me like 60 minets to do that in sted of taking out two moters . the back say`s mounty and the front is explorer still has all the mounty markings excep the grill

ya i was thinking that two in blue. in green thats the chrome bummper off my x with the plastic painted black

i do have a police issue post mount spotlight i toke off a police mounty at the same junkyard. i will have to put pics of that up later. and thanks for the problem spots i will have the tires cheacked maby tomarrow if its not cold and windy. i will try removing the break and pulling the tire

ok i turns out that both back rims are bent. i cant imagen how they go bent or even how long they were like that cuz i did not even feel in on the ride.

I have a clue, look at your original pictures of the mounty. You say you bought it totalled and spruced it up. They were bent when you bought the truck

sad to hear but it is a lot easier to fix than the axle... I had one replaces because I ran it into a wall, cost me $100 for the rim and $20 to mount the tire

sorry i sould have said this but these are not the tires that came with it. i bought these after words cuz they were 16'' rims and i had them balenced so they were fine.

ya at least it is something easy to fix. i just have to get new rims i have a tire changer and a guy down the street that can balence them. so at least i got two spare rims now
