Can anyone help, on my 98 Ex the rear wash wipe moves from side to side by 2 inches. My Ford garage say this is correct , but because I live in the UK they have'nt seen many Ex's:)

What do you mean by "side-to-side"? Im kind of confused by what you mean? If you could take a pic that would even be better.

Take out the wiper and see how much moves the rotor only. If it moves the same 2 inches...maybe a new motor will help you.

The rear wiper arm/motor is mounted on rubber bushes and it does move a bit. To get to the motor mounts you have to take off the hatch cover which is very fiddly. If it wipes ok then I would leave it alone.

thanks

I would just like to say a big thanks to all of you who replied to this post

How fiddly? I have to replace my motor since the rear wiper stopped working all together. I have already cracked part of the interior trim on the lift gate. Any ideas on how to remove it without out breaking the rest of it into teeny tiny pieces?

You have to pull the clips around the window part. Then remove a screw under the cover by the wiper and the whole cover slides up and off on L brackets. These break very easily but can be glued back on!!

hatchback trim removal

I have some problems with my rear wiper too. It doesn't clean the glass over the range. I tried to see what was wrong so I removed the panel. I wasn't able to remedy the situation but I can tell you about removing that panel:

A trim tool should be used. As I remember, start at the top (towards roof and around the glass) and work those clips first and then work your way down. Don't forget the screws on that dangling strap handle, and I think another underneath that small oval cover-plate on the sill. On mine, '99 4 door, the bottom was stuck so I pulled hard in frustration. I found that there are molded in hangers, like hooks, that hang the bottom portion to the metal. So be careful not to break these as I did! I Shoe-gooed mine back together, but that took time. So, once you remove the upper fasteners with a trim tool (I used a Stanley Wonderbar with tape on it before I bought a trim tool) you will want to slide the panel upwards and out; this is not shown or talked about in the Haynes manual, unfortunately/////

Thanks for your input. You guys rock. I'll try it out this weekend and let you know.

i know its a little late but it moves like that on my 97...

Tried it this weekend. Only took me about 20 minutes to change the motors and put it back together. Thanks for all of your help........

And then....... the next day I get in the truck and hit the wiper button waiting for the pure joy of watching it go across the window and I get nothing. Doesn't work anymore. So...... I hit it, hard with a rubber mallet and it works again!!!!! Worked this morning on the way to work, but not when I get to work. Looks like I will have to carry the rubber mallet of justice in the back of the truck at all times..........
