I had the same noise in the rear of my 2003 Explorer XLT 4x4 that many posters talk about, the loud woa, woa, woa sound like bad tires. I had 1 shop tell me it was the rear end and another said it was the rear bearings, which do you do and at what price. I was going to do the rear bearings myself but decided to have a friends mechanic do the job. I bought the hub and bearing from a local parts store for 179.00 each side. The dealer wanted 299.00 a side but theirs go bad so I went with the aftermarket set. I had a great mechanic do the repair and he only charged me 275.00 total as a side job plus 50.00 for the axle seal. We also did a axle seal because he was there and it was leaking. Wow! no more noise!! It is as quite as new, we can't remember the last time it sounded so good. I previously changed the tires because I thought it was them, which it was not. He did say the bearings were rusty and dry, I would recommend this repair first before the rear axle.

Yup, seems like it's either bearings, struts/springs, or a whiney rear diff. At least one is easy to live with.
