I have noticed that if I jack up the rear end with both wheels off the ground, the wheels are difficult to rotate by hand forwards and even more difficult backwards when the tranny is in neutral. I know it is not the brakes (I replaced the LS clutch pack and tore apart the brakes a few months ago- no problems with sticking at all). Am I looking at some sort of drag to the drivetrain in the transmission or transfer case? Or am I just being overly sensitive and the wheels should be difficult to turn by hand?

Any thoughts
Steve

Is it possible the brakes have adjusted themselves a little snug? I might try backing off the brakes a couple of notches and see if they loosen up at all.

Did you replace the LS clutch pack yourself? How difficult was it? How much did the new clutch pack cost you?

When I was replacing the clutch pack, I removed the drum and replaced wheels and had the same drag so I doubt it is the brakes. The clutch pack was not that hard once I got into it and figured out what needed to come out. It cost me $56 throuth the dealer. If you have a haynes manual and can search through this site, you won't have much trouble.

Don't forget that you are turning the driveshaft at about a three to one ratio back through a set of spiral bevel gears (not to mention the opposite axle, etc.)..... a certain amount of drag is to be expected. The different feel between forward and backward is an effect of the gear tooth design.

Are you sure you're not just trying to scare yourself?

what year?

if it helps try disconecting drive shaft and see if it turns any easier
