I was looking at my stock front shocks and noticed they have about a 3-4" piece that is part of the lower mount almost like a tube coming out of the bottom of the shock. Why is this and Im wondering if you could just get a full length shock in there?

I believe the reason for that is to give it clearance w/ the a-arm or something. I remember reading it where the explorerprocomp shocks in the front which do not have that piece gets dented and eventually leaks due to the hitting of the a-arm. Look up pro comp shocks i there's a thread that talk about that clearance.

HEy JDraper! Was it you that had that problem?

I know what you mean. You could tweak a new shock by cutting off the old mounts on the old shock and getting them welded on the new shocks. Or you could get adapters fabbed which would just allow you to use the loop eye style mount shocks. The top one is a stud and you could maybe use this type of adapter but for the bottom youd have to fab something else.

hope that helps out

Yeah, I'm one of those that had that problem. Fortunately I caught it before I installed my Pro Comp Shocks. I sent 'em back and got a set of Gabriels. They were the right style to fit the truck and they work really well both on and off road.
