This was the 5r55e that had no reverse. After taking the transmission apart, I found it has a broken reverse/low band. Basically it snapped off at the reverse servo location. There were only a few little flakes of metal, a clean break.
Since this is real uncharter waters, I want to do a good rebuild, but not stuff that is unnessary. The ATSG manual says several things need to be done, but I'm hoping you guys can give some experienced advice.
These are the things I'm definitely going to replace: reverse/low band, friction and steel plates in the clutches, all gaskets, reverse servo because it has a chip at the tip of the rod and turbine shaft speed sensor (TSS) because I slightly knicked one of the wires. Does anybody know where I can find one of these on the web, or will this have to be purchased at a Ford dealership? Also everywhere I've looked on the web for a reverse/low band is showing them to be out of stock.
Should I replace the torque converter? There was virtually no metal shavings. All the gears look great. I was beginning to get worried while taking apart.
What about the converter housing and fluid pump? The manual says to replace the hub to converter seal. I don't have the proper tool for this nor the alignment tool to put back in place. Is there anything I'm overlooking here? If I don't mesh with this, can the bell housing just be bolted back to the case.
How about the converter housing to case screws? Manual says to replace. They look okay to me.
Band adjusting lock knocks. Manual suggests to replace. They look okay to me.
Output shaft retaining ring? Manual suggests to replace. It looks okay to me.
Also, what about clutch inner and outer seals?
I would like to add that I've taken lots of pictures of the rebuild so far.
Thanks for everybody's help. I would not have taken on this project without this forum.
If I did need a couple of these things done, are there any transmission shops that will replace say a clutch inner and outer seal and then I put back together?
