Has anyone rebuilt a manual-shift 1354? Mine is starting to make a little noise (227K miles) so I'm thinking it might be time for fresh bearings and such.

Is a rebuild kit available, or will I be buying bearings individually?

Thanks,

I do beleive there are rebuild kit available out there. but for what you're going to pay and the headache it's going to be you're probably better off buying a used t-case with low miles and dropping it in.

Last I knew, there was no rebuild kit.

My Navajo ate the transfer case under the extended warranty once, and that was $1700 in parts & labor from a ford dealership in Flagstaff, AZ. It was also about 6 years ago, so prices have probably gone up since then.

I know there are some parts available for them, I know you can get a new chain for it, i thinking about rebuilding my 4405 a while back but decided against it.

I have read in the manual how to rebuild it - there aren't that many parts to replace. Unfortunately, there are some specialty tools required.

I need to figure out the bearing numbers, so I don't have to buy them from Ford.

What kinda specialty tools are needed for it?

If you get the ford part # off the bearing any REPUTIBLE parts store can cross them to Chicago Rawhide or Timkin. Same goes for any seals you might need. Not sure about specialty tools though!!!!

Rick,

I was hoping to have a pile of new parts BEFORE pulling apart the case!

Josh,

You need specific bearing pullers for some of the bearings.

I did just find a shop in Vegas that specializes in transfer case rebuild kits. According to their web site, for about $200 I will have all the parts needed (including chain) to rebuild the box. I sent them an email asking a few questions - haven't heard back yet.

Specialty tools

My suggestion would be to check with Advance Auto or Auto Zone, they sometimes rent a kit with three or four different pullers on them. All you have to do is pay a reasonable deposit!! It's worth a shot to save a few bucks!!

I checked out lightruck.com's web site. Looks like they have everything! I will be giving them a call.

Thanks for the tip.
