My 1992 Ford Explorer has 150,000. miles on it, when the transmission started jerking when I put it in reverse and when I would come to a stop, it would lockup and kill the motor. The local Ford dealership took in down, and the pan was full of metal. I had them install a rebuilt, I have to say it works great. The question is did I pay too much.

Transmission $2065.33
Fluid 12.35
Labor 541.15
Shop Supplies 104.75
Tax 157.13

Total $2880.71

What do you think??

My the way the vehicle is in excellent condition, other wise I won't have put the tranny in.

Want my honest opinion? They stuck it to ya in the rear... I've always seen the trannys go for 1100-1500 give or take, but 2900, yah, you got screwed.

I paid about $2500 two and a half years ago for a rebuilt plus labor. So that's right in the same ballpark. Try doing a search and see what kind of figures you find.

i paid roughly $1400.00

It was rebuilt at the dealer... so that is the fair going price... I'm sure you could have gone down the road and got it done for about $1200. That's what I did the first time... it only lasted about 30K miles. Now it's sitting at the dealers garage getting rebuilt... for about the same as yours

I am an expert at this subject. I am on my 4th tranny with the last put in at 95,000 miles or so. All three have been in the $2000-$2300 range. So from my experience, I think you are right in line considering the higher cost by going through the dealer.

Hey Forest...how long have you lived in Ames? I lived in Des Moines for several years...can still remember the Vesha (sp?) riots and Welch Ave.!

Ya might not like to see this but...

cost of tranny

I paid almost $3000.00 for my tranny at a ford dealership. $1400.00 of that was for the tranny itself and the rest was for labor, fluid, tranny cooler, taxs, ect.
94 xlt 200,000k's when it went

Forest, I think you paid on the high side, but not from a dealership. When the tranny on our '96 went south on a road trip last spring, the Ford store in Farmington, New Mexico, quoted us a price of $2,200 for a factory rebuilt unit. We limped the rig home and had a local shop do the work for about $1,800. Still... ouch!

re:

I payed 2780.00 but that was for a brand new tranny right from the ford factory. I took about day to build. they said and shipped here was 3 days. They couldn't even rebuild my tranny it was cooked so bad it smell horrible and looked like tar.
good look
