Background on this truck. 2000 Explorer Sport 2wd with 4.0 OHV engine and M5OD trans. 103k miles. Got into it the other day and the clutch pedal felt notchy, but otherwise clutch worked fine. Next day, pedal was really bad and would not go down to the floor. Drove something else that day. Thought I would try it the following day, and now the clutch will go down to the floor to disengage, but still feels notchy and is now slipping. In summary, time to replace. Looking on Rock Auto, there are tons of options. Not sure if I need a self adjusting clutch or not or what the factory one even is. Any honest recommendations from people that have had experience with certain brands and styles used in their explorers? Thanks in advance for your replies!

One of the experts on here @410Fortune or @Turdle mentioned something about a Ranger clutch being a heavier duty replacement. I can never remember

yes! the ranger SOHC clutches and flywheel are more HD and have a better feel iirc.

and luk clutches only!

good "luk" ;) on this project!

Get a Luk, it what Ford used in it. And be sure you put in a new slave, and be sure it’s a Luk too.

@GR Gold

I've bought all the parts twice from Rock Auto, and had an independent shop install them for $500 flat fee.

Each shop took 3-4 days, in between other jobs. In return, I got a reasonable rate. Win-Win ;)

Different shops did the work both times, and BOTH wouldn't consider installing any parts other than LUK brand.

Buy everything LUK brand:
NEW Flywheel, pilot bearing, clutch, pressure plate, clutch slave cylinder, and clutch master cylinder.

I can't emphasize enough, don't reuse anything - replace everything.

For instance, if you don't buy a new Master Cylinder, don't be surprised if it doesn't "activate" the clutch slave cylinder.

Also, don't make the mistake and resurface your current flywheel - Buy a new flywheel for less than the cost of resurfacing the old one; LUK LFW156 for $47 from Rock Auto...

This clutch system has very tight operating tolerances BOTH mechanically and hydraulically.

When worn out, throw every component away and start over with new LUK brand parts.

In closing look out / be aware of the teeny tiny o-ring that interconnects the master cylinder line to the slave cylinder line.

If you lose that, you'll be in a world of pain -
