Hey Guys,

I have some slight whining in the rear end under acceleration at certain speeds. I believe this to be the rear diff problem.

I have an open (conventional) diff.

I'd like to use the Redline shockproof gear oil the stuff looks like would offer some great protection but i am not sure if its right for an explorer application.

Does anyone know?

The Ford Explorer rear diff's require a "full synthetic" gear oil of 75W-140 weight and from what I "briefly" read about the Redline brand you wish to use, I didn't see anything mentioned about the product being "full synthetic". Couldn't tell you if the Redline brand is safe to use in an Explorer, just telling you what Ford and the Haynes Manual calls for in the rear diff. Personally, I use Mobil 1 75W-140 gear oil in the rear diff and I have the "open diff" with 3.55 gears and do not have any kind of rear diff whine. Some other people in here that have had a rear diff whine said using "Royal Purple (Full Synthetic)" Gear Oil solved their rear diff whine problem. BTW, you won't need to add any "friction modifier" to the diff since you have an "open diff", just in case you didn't know.

It's not really going to work well for you.

If you're getting gear whine and you're sure it's not anything else, that's not really a big deal. A bit of whine doesn't mean it's broken, it just means that the gears aren't perfectly set anymore. Noise is also inherent to bevel gears at high speed.

I'm not sure if the spec changed between second and third gens, but running a high quality hypoid gear oil (like Amsoil) of the proper viscosity should keep everything running well. If you really can't stand the whine, you could always get a new bevel set and reset to new specs.

Yup, thanks. The redline stuff says it has a rating of 75W-140... its strange. Its like its thinner but offers increased wear protection from grinding gears.

But i do have access to the royal purple stuff, it already has the friction modifier added but that shouldn't be a problem.

Correct! Friction modifier won't harm an open diff at all, just an additive for Limited Slip Diff's.

I put the readline shockproof stuff in at 150k thats 100k ago. (no added friction modifier).

I can still smell all that old diff oil on my hands...... yuk...

hi rmcknight,

so you like the stuff? was your rear diff humming before and this quieted it down?
