regearing from 3.73

i have a 98 4.0 sohc with 33X12.50X15's and i have a 3.73.. and its laggin, and im getting 10 mpg. i was considering moving up to a 4.56... but im wondering how much it will cost and which brand i should go with.. could i do it myself.. thanks alot

The actual gears will run you about 160 per dif, then another 150-200 each for install kits.

If you do not have the tools and have not done a gear set-up before I would have a shop do it. Install ranges form 150-300 per diff.

All in all parts and labor you are looking at around 1000 to 1500 add the lockers on top of that......

your mileage is slightly hiher than 10mpg if oyu are calulating directly off the odometer. Since your speedometer is off after the larger tires. Anyway... watch for specials online where you can order a gear set and get a free install kit. I wouldnt spend more than 500 per axle on a gear install including the gears and install kit.

Mine (2wd) was about $550 total to regear to 4.56.

i spent 700 bucks on two sets of gears, and two installation kits.

i spent another $500 on tools

Then about 4 months reading and teaching myself how to install my own gears. It ain't brain surgery, but if you plan on doing them again then i would suggest saving yourself the headache and get it done somewhere.

4.56 is excellent on the freeway with 33's. Great passing power and good mileage.

No it will not effect your abs system as long as you reinstall the excitor ring in the rear dif, but it will throw your speedometer a bit more out of wack than the tires have done.

you will be able to go just as fast as you could before... you will just rev higher.

when i had 3.27's... i could get over 100 mph, but it would take FOREVER. now i can get to 100 mph like a hot comb on nap ass hair.

I haven't had it over 90 on the freeway, but it has no problem. Now given my RPM's run a bit higher. At 80ish I run around about 3000rpm.

damn thts not too bad.. i know im not going to be going 80 all that much... and city driving is what is going to be messing up my gas mileage anyways. i talked to one guy, and he quoted me like 650.. but i might be able to get him down to 600
