Flyguy,
I noticed in your profile that you have a relocated intake tube. Where exactly did you put it? Do you have any pictures? Anybody done this also?
Thanx

Look at the Intake tube. As it goes over the fan it becomes square. It is very restrictive to air. Sure a KKM helps but it still breathes through the highly restrictive stock intake tube. Plus I want to know if I can get more power from this mod than I could with a KKM.

This may be a dumb question but with all this talk about intake one question remains in my mind... If you are modifying to get more air for more power, won't you be using extra gas that is being mixed with this extra air? If so, how badly does this affect mileage?

Oh hey guys... yeah, I built a 3" tube that goes over the fan and stops where the battery would be, behind the headlight. Im guessing it getts a bit cooler air, being up front and away from the engine, plus the tube doesnt compress like the factory one does. Ive been having some minor trouble with it rubbing on the fan and alternator pully though. but I think a zip tie fixed the situation. It would work alot better if I had a body lift.

LLStrike,

To answer your question, I average about 25mpg with my mods now. I run 93 octane b/c of the chip, but am really pleased with my mileage. It ranges from about 20 from a tank of offroading and WOT driving, to 28 with easy highway driving. Go to my website for a complete list of mods.

Whoh...ive never even touched that kind of milage... but you have a 2wd sport, compared to my 4wd xlt. I get around 18mpg freeway. But alot of that freeway is uphill, with my doing around 80mph. So kinda hard to say. :)

What kind of pipe did you use? and am I understanding correctly that you have relocated the battery? Sorry, I'm clueless when it comes to working with plastic engine parts.

Yeah, the battery was moved to where the airbox used to be. And I used 3" PVC which I painted blue...

hey flyguy...you got any pics? i'd like to see your new intake tube.

Yeah, I have my camera back... I was hoping to get it with my new alternator in there too.. but those Mr. Alternator fools seem to be having a problem getting me a working one...

Nick

good lets see those pics! i think i'll have to add this mod too!

Looks like I've brought this topic alive! MUAHAHAHA

Anyway.. flyguy lets see those pics. That is EXACTLY what I want to do.

Can you tell me what was involved and how you did it. I would love you for a long time, I promise.

I'm VERY interested.. thanks!

Well... I removed my intake tube.. mostly because of matenanence problems. Getting it to connect properly to the TB is a challenge. I thought it was causing some idle problems... but the symptoms returend even with the stock tube on... so I might reconnect it...if I do.. I will post pics. My vehical has been in much disrepair lately, hence my lack of activity on the board. No, I havent had the PVC melt.... but I did have it get a hole rubbed in it by the alternator and I have had it hit the fan before. I need to find something better... suggestions? Right now Im using 3" tubing... which fits flush with my after market MAS... its real clean... when you look down it, its just a straight pipe... but my problem comes at the elbow to connect to the TB. Its to large. The 3" elbow is too big for the TB and I have to connect a piece of pipe to shrink it down and connect the furnco fitting... oh well... Maybe Ill give it another shot. I really need a new air filter to redesign it. Mabye do it professional like.... hmmm... know where I can get a 3" chrome pipe? and then I would need to drill holes for the vacume hoses... hmmmm

nick

the pvc is just like plumbing right?
Does that melt ever if it gets hot?

Someone here reported their PVC setup became warped from engine heat. PVC is also more susceptible to heat soak, that is the PVC will absorb heat over time, transferring it to your intake air which is bad.

My question is if they do make a chome pipe for the Explorer, especially a 95+ will it fit the 91-94 with a little work.

Also, I wanna know if the plastic OEM tube will fit the 91-94.

You mean, will a 95+ intake tube fit on our 91-94? I don't know. I don't see why not, it's the same 4.0 motor between 94 and 95.
Don't know of any aftermarket intake tubes. Those riceboys have them, maybe on can be modd'ed for ours but I doubt it because of the size. A metal fabricating shop can probably make one, aluminum at least. Then tape it with heat reflective tape and it will give smooth air and cool air. That's what I want..

I will go to a junkyard pretty soon (after I get my exhaust) and I will look into fitting a 95+ intake tube. If you do it, you will need the breather tube too. Man, it seems like groundhog day, like I posted about this in another thread recently. Maybe I did?

Yeah I'm sure a junkyard won't charge to much for those tubes.

The breather tube goes from the intake to the oil right? Does the 91-94 have that? I haven't noticed if it did.

I think I'll go tomorrow and get that stuff.

mark (quick) yes we do have a breather tube it goes from the pass side of the engine block and to the side of the intake tube.

Quick post back here if you go to the junkyard and see if it can work. I don't think it should be too many $$.

BTW JimA, we're talking about the breather hose that connects between the oil filler neck and the air tube between the MAF and TB. Not the one on the bottom that hooks into the air tube down low. My thinking is that this (upper) breather hose will have to be longer to reach if you put a 95+ intake on ours. Presumably Ford put a longer tube on the 95+'s to reach.
