that is the breather i thought i was talking about. oops sorry for the confusion...i thought we only had 1 breather?

flyguy..

How did you get the cables for the battery to reach and how did you get the MAF sensor to reach?

Thanks

Well I just called Ford and they said the ****** plastic intake tube is $125.. Give me a break.

And my local junkyard claims they don't have one. I'll have to look more into it.

PVC Intake Mod

Hey guys after reading this post about the PVC I decided to go to the parts store(Home Depot). I bought a few things I thought I would need to get the job done and it works! I also painted it with a sandstone finsh and then decided to wrap the whole thing with heat reflective tape from the pipe insulation section. I also took a dremel tool and beveled all of the leading edges so the air would flow smoother. The only problem I noticed is that the hood is a little harder to close. I also have an electric fan so the stock shroud is no problem. If any one is interested, I will put the parts list below. I think I will name my truck Fankenstien.

1 - PVC 3"diam. pipe
1 - 90 degree male-to-female elbow
1 - 45 degree female-to-female elbow
1 - 3in.-to-3in. rubber pipe coupling(Airbox-to-PVC side)
1 - 3in.-to-2in. rubber pipe coupling(PVC-to-Throttle Body)
1 - Roll of heat reflective tape(Pipe insulation tape2"x1/8")
1 - PVC cement
Total=around $30

Basicaly it goes together like this starting at the airbox. This is for a 91 Explorer and measurements are questimates. It took me 15 minutes to make.

3in.-to-3in. rubber pipe coupling -- 6 or7"L X 3"diam -- 45 degree female-to-female elbow-- roughly 12"L X 3diam -- 90 degree male-to-female elbow -- 3in.-to-2in. rubber pipe coupling

What did you do with the battery, did you relocate it? If you did, where?

JimA I think there are 2 breathers...one attaches to the intake right after the MAF...and the other one is well-hidden, attaching to the intake right after it starts behind the passenger side headlight. Maybe this lower one is not a breather? Anyway it's a tube and it channels air to the bottom end of the engine. I guess for those that have a KKM setup this tube doesn't do as much.

I noticed on the PVC intake page at RangerStation they write, "At present the crankcase vent goes to a small K&N filter, but it will soon be piped into the PVC to be earth friendly."

Josh, about that PVC...someone here reported that they did the PVC mod and the heat warped it out, just thought I would let you know..

Quick try a less local junkyard. eheh. I would not pay Ford $125 for one.

sorry about all the disjointed replies but it was better than posting 3 msg's I guess.
whew this thread is splitting to a lot of topics..

Rhett
Yea I read that too. I also wrapped the pipe with 2 in wide by 1/8 inch thick heat reflective tape. Its only been in for 2 days now, but its working good so far. I didn't notice any definate power increase, but, the throttle response improved a little bit.

wow. at my full service pick n pull, my airbox and intake tube was only $35

So has anyone here relocate the intake tube and battery. I really want to do this.

My main concern is that the battery cables and/or MAS sensor connecter won't reach.

Let me know..

Yes I have... Mas reaches fine...the battery cables are tight but it makes it... What did not reach is the vacume hoses that connect to the airbox... which I had originally relocated to the base of the airfilter. It might reach if you relocate it to the acutual intake tube though.

How did you mount the battery down?

Also, do you have any pics? That would be awesome.

Heh.. I didnt. I just set it where the airbox used to be. It was real snug in there... and it couldnt move either way... Sounds bad... but even with my crazy driving, I had no problems. I assume you could use one of those battery tie down kits... but I never got around to it.

OSO.....Quick...Here are the photo's you asked for. The tape runs for about 15 a roll. For the tube you'll need about 1.5 rolls....the entire tube and stock airbox you'll need about 4. I can tell that I got a few extra HP from it. Nothing major, but in the Vegas heat it made it worth my while. You can get it from Summit, part #THE-14002. Here's also the link to their site.

That looks EXACTLY like my insulated air tube. Only I used Cool TApe and not the Thermotec stuff...but the tape looks like pretty much the same stuff.

About the relocated battery, I would like to see pics of that too flyguy.

Ill see about that. Right now its pretty much the normal setup.. buy I kept my intake in case I decide to give it another go. I really cant tell a diffrence with it on or off. cept with it on I was getting pretty bad milage (due to the poor link at the TB)

I took my battery out today (while I was at it I cleaned the connections, etc..)

The battery mount seems to be welded to the body. But with the battery gone you do have plenty of room for the filter. On my 93 I just have 1 oil breather hose (unlike 95+ with 2 tubes). I'm guessing with a little work a 95+ intake tube will fit perfectly.

And for the battery being in the intake spot, with a little work and a tiedown it should be a perfect fit. According to flyguy it fits pretty snug.

The MAS connector has enough slack to reach but I'm not exactly sure about the battery cables. We'll see won't we.

I must now go find an intake tube.. shouldn't be to hard. :)

keep in mind my Optima battery fits in there pretty snug. I think the stock battery is actually bigger. Your old battery better not be welded in! The battery tray is though. hmm... Also.. there is a plastic type tray the airbox sits on I think... thats where I put my battery... the battery proved to be a little heavy though and it kinda slouched to the side.

Optimas are small batteries, but I have one of those big Duralast Gold batteries, and I don't think it will fit in the airbox spot. It might be better to move the battery to the passenger side, but the routing of the cables would be tricky.

Oh I didn't notice the small battery until you said something. I normal size battery as well.

I'm thinking about buying a battery relocator from SummitRacing and putting it in the back of my car.

The part number is SUM-G1199 but it costs $42.
