I need a new trans and I'm leaning towards a reman unit instead of a rebuild. What are the general thoughts on this? I know the 5RR5E in my '98 X has quite a few known issues which is making me shy away from a rebuild. My shop recommended a Jasper but they're too d@mn expensive! Anyone ever heard of RoadMasters Transmission Services, Inc. in Schaumburg, IL? They seem to offer the same types of services that Jasper does. Also my shop quoted me 6 - 6.5 hours labor to r&r (including a full flush). Does that sound fair?

Overall, it is my opinion that the remanufactured transmissions may have a better average level of build than those built by a "down the street just around the corner" shop. I can imagine some shops may do better, but for my money I certainly can endorse the route you have chosen. Check to see what FORD gets for a reman as you go along.

6-6.5 hours is pretty low, if you want it rebuilt the trans guy at my shop is very good and meticulous, he could do it hit up www.hightechautoandtruck.com and send kurt an email.

Thanks for the posts. I ordered a reman'd trans from RoadMasters Transmission Services, Inc. in Schaumburg, IL. They offered a heavy duty package so I opted for it. My shop installed it in just under 6 hours and the truck shifts like a dream. The total cost (even with shipping the reman'd trans here and the core back) was less than I would have spent on a rebuild (by about $500). The trans has a 24mo/24k warranty (2x longer than rebuilt). With the upgrades and HD treatment to the trans, all indications are I'll never have to worry about it again. I'll keep you guys posted.

Glad you're happy with your new tranny.
