I recently purchased a remote for my Explorer since it was missing when I bought it. Here is the procedure required to program mine, different security systems will require different procedures. Hopefully this will save others the added cost of letting the dealership program it for you.
1. Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine off).
2. Locate the valet/programming button (small black button probably by the red LED or parking brake pedal).
3. Press and hold the button the door locks will cycle and if you have an alarm it will sound.
4. While still holding the button press the lock button on the remote, the locks should cycle and the alarm should sound.
5. If you have multiple remotes press the lock button on all of them while still holding the valet button. When all remotes have been programmed release the button. Your remotes are programed!
