I have had best luck with DEI products, ie: Viper, Rattler, Python... They are easiest to install, set up and use. They also last a very long time. Check out amazon.com

Are these newer products compatible with an older 97 Explorer?

You can put these in anything fuel injected. I have never done one in an explorer and tied the factory keyeless in with it, but I know for a fact it can be done. You need to search out someone that has done it and see if they can tell you a bypass or something to use.
