I haven't found a detailed thread on removing and installing a 1991-1994 A4LD.

I did find a thread on pulling a 1996 4R55E: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102730&highlight=removal+A4LD. Isn't the 4R55E just an A4LD with a bunch more solenoids inside? Seems like it would mount the same other than the wire harness being bigger and/or more complicated.

Seems like the exhaust y-pipe bolts are the hardest part of the process. What are those? 15mm? 14mm? I have lots of 3/8" extensions and 6-pt. sockets as well as a transmission jack. Shouldn't be too bad.

Curious if I need to jack stand all four corners of the X or can I just do the driver's side? The trans. and jack will come out that side (more room in garage on that side; old garage: built for a model-T).

Is there a thread on removing and installing specifically the A4LD? If not, I will do a photo thread in the next few weeks.

You could do it on ramps. I've done it that way many times until I bought a lift. They are basically bolted to the engine through the bell housing just like any other RWD. You would have to disconnect the rear transmission mount, driveshaft, and wiring harness. Do you have the Haynes, or Chilton't manual? They have a step, by step procedure, such as removing the starter, unbolting the torque converter, and disconnecting the battery (which they pretty much recommend on most repairs).

I have the Haynes and also the $15 aftermarket A4LD manual which covers removal and installation.

I just like looking at photos before I dive into a project.
