Ok I cant seem to get the fan clutch off my 97 sport (4.0 OHV)
Does the nut turn clockwise or counterclockwise?.
I rented the tool but there seems to be a lot of conflicting post as to the correct direction to turn the nut!

Look on the top of the fan shroud. There should be a "statement" molded into the plastic, saying either left hand or right hand thread. You can also try looking closely on and around the nut and/or fan clutch itself, to see if it is stamped into it somewhere, or on a sticker. If you don't find anything, I would assume it is a standard right-handed thread. That is the general rule, that threads are right-handed unless stated otherwise.

I just removed the clutch, to install an electric fan, in my '93 Ranger. The nut on my truck was right-handed. The spare shroud I had, from another Ranger, that I used to make my custom e-fan setup, was embossed "Left-Handed Thread", so they can be either/or.

Also, soak it in a good penetrating oil for a few days, before you try to remove it. If it is right hand thread, you can rest the handle of your wrench/breaker bar against the the under side of the passngr. side frame rail, and bump the starter (after disabling the ignition). This will break the nut loose.
