Removing halfshaft from knuckle

Do you need a puller for this if it has never been done before? The manual says to use a puller. Also, is it possible to tie the 1/2shaft and knuckle away as an assembly if you replace a ball joint? (assuming of course they do not come apart)

its best to use a puller but not nessicary.
Move the nut to the very end so no threads are exposed and hit it a coupla' times with a hammer.
 






Ditto. A couple good whacks is generally enough to pop it loose if it isn't loose from the start. Upon reinstallation, use a bit of grease or anti-sieze to lube the spline. It will ensure that future removals don't pose a problem.

I guess I will use a soft hammer. I was concerened that I would hurt the CV joints doing that.
 






Just put a block of wood between the hammer and the stud if you're nervous. I always leave the nut near the end of the threads in case I miss with the hammer. It's saved me a couple times. :) The first time I did mine, one slid right out as soon as I removed the nut. The other took one hit with a small ball peen and a 2x4 scrap. Subsequent removals have involved nothing more than removing the nut, but as I mentioned, I always put a dab of grease or anti-seize on the splines upon reassembly. Makes things a lot easier in the future. :)
