I will be in San Deigo in April for a vacation. I will be renting an Explorer. Where is there some mild wheeling I could take the family on. Wife and kids would like to see some desert and interesting natural sites in the San Deigo Area.

Thanks for all replys

I've been waiting for one of the San Diego guys to give you some advice, but they seem to have disappeared.

For scenery with the option of some easy offroading you can't go wrong with Anza-Borrego State Park. Another hour and a half further north-east is Joshua Tree National Park.

You can check out the thread in this forum about Joshua Tree NP. A few people from the board just spent last Saturday there.

Truckhaven borders on Anza-Borrego (the NE corner). You can check out the Truckhaven thread on how to get there. Pinyon Mountain trail with Heart Attack Hill is in Anza-Borrego.

Remember, after March it gets pretty hot in the desert. Tempertures over 100 F are quite common and by May-June 120 degrees are possible.

There are plenty of trails in the area for some moderate wheel'n. I think you should get in contact with Dan, aka "StarSailor" from Palm Springs. Do a search for him, or find him on the Joshua Tree thread. I go a couple of times a month, and would enjoy being your tour guide. Dan has a stocker, and goes out as much as I do. A lot of the bigger dawgs, and me, are planning on going out the first weekend in April to Los Coyotes. You would have to ask some of the outher guys if there are trails there for stockers. Hope you have a great vacation. If you need any other info on the area, just drop me a line.

As far as Los coyotes there are some easy trails that are out there. But since it is a rental just take it out full coverage and then go out and run the fun trails that are out there. The main problem with some of the trails in Los coyates is alot of brush on some of the trails that will add a few scrathes. I Have never taken or been with a stock ranger or explorer out there. When I was open with 31's and 4" lift I went quite a few places usually had to get strapped a few times and use alot of throttle. But don't forget about the brush out there.

Matt
